It was great to watch the delight of the many locals who turned out to the Tomato Tasting and Peoples Choice awards at the Southern Harvest Farmers Market. A huge range of sizes and colours of tomatoes had everyone intrigued, from Tommy Toe, Tiny Tim, Green Grape, Jeunne Flamee, Granny’s Throwing Tomato and more.

From small round and red to orange and light yellow, tomatoes come in all shapes, sizes and flavours, many of which can only be found direct from farmers as they are designed for flavour not for lasting ability.

The winner of the People’s Choice Tomato Awards was Granny’s Throwing Tomato – but no doubt these will be so popular they’ll sell out quick. Right now tomato season is in full swing, with a number of local growers providing different varieties. Whether you want to eat them fresh, whip up a great gazpacho (cold tomato soup), or preserve them for using during the winter, now is the time to stock up.

Many thanks to Jennie and Chris Curtis along with others from the Farmers Market Committee for providing much entertainment and joy.

See you at the Southern Harvest Farmers Market for more great local produce this Saturday 9am to 12noon at the Anglican Church Hall in Butmaroo Street.
