Suz – The Heart Behind Branch & Burrow
Suz is the driving force behind Branch & Burrow, a small family farm nestled just outside of Braidwood, New South Wales. In 2018, she made a life-changing decision to leave a fast-paced existence behind, relocating with her husband Trent and son Ollie from a 5-acre property to a 50-acre spread in Braidwood – in pursuit of a slower, more intentional way of living.
The move was rooted in a desire to grow their own food, or source it as close to home as possible. That same year, the family welcomed a new son, Leo, and set about building a veggie garden and chicken coops to house their first Heritage breed flock.
Suz chose Australorp chickens for their suitability to the local climate, their robust temperament, and their dual purpose as both egg layers and soil improvers. Over time, the flock expanded to include other heritage breeds, and the family’s youngest, Ollie, even raised ducks – adding duck eggs to the mix.
What began as a way to nourish her own family grew into something much bigger. In 2020, Suz trialled raising pasture-raised meat chickens, and by 2021 she was sharing them with her local community. Dorper, White Dorper, and Aussie White sheep were added to introduce pasture-raised lamb, and in 2023, pork joined the range through a partnership with Duroc and Hampshire breeders Dewsbury Pig Stud.
At its core, Branch & Burrow reflects Suz’s deeply held values: producing nutrient-dense food, caring for animals and the land, and practising the principles of regenerative agriculture and permaculture – all while fostering community connection and supporting the local economy.
For Suz, it’s personal. Branch & Burrow was born from the same juggling act so many families know well – Â the quest for simple, wholesome food even when time is short, and a longing to put down roots in a place and a community that matters.
