Southern Harvest Multi-Farm Produce Box Scheme

Local • Seasonal • Sustainable

Produce Box Assistant

Southern Harvest is a farmer and producer-led organisation working to foster the sustainable growth and availability of local produce across the ACT and South East NSW.

Our multi-farm produce box scheme brings together produce from a range of local farmers and producers and connects them directly with households across the region. We work with the seasons, packing boxes with fresh fruit, vegetables and other locally produced food as it becomes available.

The Position

We are looking for a Produce Box Assistant to join our small team on a casual/part-time basis.

The role is hands-on and practical. You will work alongside our staff and volunteers to receive, sort, weigh and pack fresh produce into weekly boxes, and help get those boxes ready for collection and distribution.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with food, being part of a small team and contributing to a more local and sustainable food system.

The work is based primarily in Fyshwick, ACT, with occasional work at other locations and some local transport of produce.

Hours: Predominantly Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, with some flexibility required during busy periods.

Employment: Casual or part-time, with an initial six-month contract and potential for extension.

Pay will be in accordance with, or above, the relevant award. Entitlements include superannuation, penalty rates where applicable and other applicable employment entitlements.

Responsibilities

Working with our team and volunteers, you will help with:

● Receiving and checking produce from local farmers and producers;

● Weighing, sorting and packing fresh produce into customer boxes;

● Preparing produce for distribution to our regional hubs;

● Stocktaking and keeping accurate records of produce;

● Maintaining clean, organised and food-safe packing and storage areas;

● Loading and unloading produce and equipment;

● Transporting produce between producers, our storage facility and distribution hubs when required; and

● Working collaboratively with staff and volunteers to ensure weekly box packing and distribution runs smoothly.

About You

Essential

● A current Australian full/unrestricted driver’s licence;

● Good communication skills and the ability to work well with others;

● Able to work independently and reliably;

● Comfortable working in a physical role involving lifting, carrying and moving produce and equipment;

● Good attention to detail and an ability to follow packing and food-handling procedures;

● A positive, practical approach to getting the job done; and

● An interest in and commitment to local food and supporting local farmers and producers.

Desirable

● Your own reliable vehicle;

● A current NSW/ACT Food Safety Supervisor Certificate;

● Experience working with fresh food, produce, hospitality, warehousing or distribution; and

● Knowledge of or interest in local and sustainable food systems.

Why work with Southern Harvest?

Southern Harvest is a community of farmers, producers, consumers and supporters working to strengthen our regional food system.

Our produce box scheme is about more than packing boxes. It is a way of creating direct relationships between farmers and eaters, supporting local producers and making fresh, seasonal food more accessible to our community.

If you enjoy practical work, fresh food and being part of a small team doing something positive for our local food system, we’d love to hear from you.

Location

Produce box operations are based in Fyshwick, ACT, with distribution hubs across the ACT and surrounding NSW.
