Description

Join us for the Canberra Urban Farms Tour.

Patchwork Urban Farm, Canberra City Farm, Many Ways Urban Farm and Ainslie Urban Farm.

Patchwork Urban Farm is a community oriented urban farm based in Canberra, providing members with chemical-free, hyper-local produce grown in under-utilised yards and verge spaces. Patchwork do weekly veggie boxes, available from October to May on a sliding scale payment, so that everyone can access delicious organically grown produce no matter their financial circumstances. On this tour you can expect to see 2 of our yard plots, and all the different veggies we have growing in them, while enjoying a delicious morning tea and meeting like minded people.
Next up will be Canberra City Farm (CCF), an all-volunteer, community gardens, in the heart of Canberra, set up as an educational facility to spread the word about sustainable gardening, good soil management, and waste management.  CCF have a number of orchards, a vineyard, about sixty individual garden allotments, and large communal gardens.  We focus on good social interaction, in a safe environment.
And while you are there, you can do a quick tour of Southern Harvest Association‘s storage and packing facility at CCF. We’ll be putting together picnic lunches, available for pre-order, including preserves and produce form CCF as well as other local producers. Alternatively, bring your own picnic and enjoy the beautiful Farm surroundings.

Ainslie Urban farm is on a ¼ acre block. When Fiona and her family moved there in 2008 there were only 2 trees on the block – a cherry plum and sour cherry tree in the back corner. They have planted over 50 fruit trees, made vegie beds and a home for our chickens, 2 beehives and working rabbits. Over time the children started calling it “The Farm” which has now become Ainslie Urban Farm. Fiona started growing microgreens in 2013 for the restaurant at Merici College where she taught sustainability and ran the award-winning Kitchen Garden. The microgreen production expanded and in 2016 the business was moved to ‘the farm’ in Ainslie. They built a greenhouse on our block, and it is here that they now grow seasonal microgreens and distribute them to local restaurants and to SHA box customers.

Many Ways Urban Farm is a micro farm located across three suburban blocks in Canberra’s inner north. The farm is operated by Lil, along with the help of friends, family, the landholders and volunteers. Many Ways produces veggies, herbs and edible flowers, and uses our farm fresh flowers to create seasonal flower bouquets. As well as being a producer with Southern Harvest, they supply to a few local restaurants and offer veggie and flower subscriptions. On this tour you’ll visit their Watson plot where a variety of vegetables are grown and harvested. It is also the location of the greenhouse where all the seedlings start their life! Lil will share her experience as a farmer starting on a tight budget with limited space, and the journey from just wanting to grow food for people, to being passionate about business. You will have the opportunity to get your hands dirty and get a demo of one of my favourite farm tools!

Ticket holders will be emailed further information on how to get there and what to bring the day before the event.
