Canberra City Farm Education Centre Open Day and Launch.

Local community group Canberra City Farm is officially launching their education centre in Fyshwick as part of their Open Day being held on Sunday 19 November 2017.

Canberra City Farm signed a 10-year licence agreement with the ACT Government in October 2015, to establish a community-run Education Centre at a site on Dairy Road in Fyshwick.

“The Canberra City Farm Education Centre has demonstrations of how people can grow and enjoy healthy foods, it shows options for sustainable living, and it creates social events that bring the community together,” said Canberra City Farm President, Keith Colls.

“We are also working with local farmers, education institutions like the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) Solutions, businesses like Global Worming and Home Grown Me, and a range of other community groups to create a space for people to learn and share knowledge”.

Since work started on the site in October 2016, the Canberra City Farm has established community garden allotments, demonstration garden beds, a cob pizza oven, natural building roundhouses, a herb spiral, greenhouses that are growing seedlings, a commercial kitchen, worm composting and work is underway to establish market gardens and to raise and breed a variety of heritage breed chickens.

“This centre is providing training and education on food production and options for sustainable living,” said Mr Colls.

“And all of this is being complemented by regular practical education and working bee opportunities for the community to engage in.”

The Canberra City Farm Open Day will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday 19 November 2017. There will be hourly farm tours, free pizzas cooked in the cob oven, herbal teas and scones, chooks and kids activities, demonstrations and talks on how to make a rocket stove, wicking beds, solar cookers and ovens, bees, stalls of other local groups, and much more.
